How a Matterport tour is made
An operator places a Matterport camera on a tripod and takes a scan every few metres. The current Pro3 camera uses LiDAR, the older Pro2 uses infrared depth sensors, and Matterport also accepts captures from some 360° cameras and LiDAR-equipped iPhones. Matterport's cloud then stitches the scans into a 3D model. From that one model you get the walkthrough, the 'dollhouse' overview, a measurement tool and, as paid add-ons, schematic floor plans and CAD-ready files. The tour lives on Matterport's platform, and each published tour counts as an 'active space' against the limit of your subscription plan.
How a 360° virtual tour is made
A 360° tour is built from photographs, not a scan. A professional 360° camera captures one full panorama per room position, usually at several exposures that are blended so bright windows and darker interiors both stay visible. The panoramas are colour-corrected, linked together with clickable hotspots, and paired with a floor plan, a location map and property details. The finished tour is hosted at its own link. When Matterport is worth the premium
Choose Matterport when the measurements are the point: architects and interior designers working from as-built dimensions, facility managers keeping a digital twin of a building, construction teams documenting progress, insurers recording a property's condition, or a large portfolio owner with an in-house camera and a global team already on the platform. In those cases the 3D data does work a photo-based tour can't.
When a 360° tour is the better choice
